Hubert Donald "Don" Thacker Sr.
February 9, 1929 - December 1, 2021
Hubert Donald "Don" Thacker Sr. of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. He died at home from complications of Parkinson's Disease at the age of 92.
Don was born in Spring Creek, Va., on February 9, 1929, to the late Hubert Dabney Thacker and Genevieve Ellen Thacker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Janet Fox, of Harrisonburg, Va. They were married one-month shy of 71 years. He was also preceded in death by his son, Hubert Donald Thacker Jr.; sister, Kathleen Suter; and son-in-law, Michael Witt Sr.
Don devoted his life taking care of and providing the very best for his family. He truly loved the printing business. He started working in a print shop at age 11 sweeping floors and never left the industry.
Don was a man with goals, a plan and determination. Until he purchased Art Printing Company in 1965, he always worked three jobs: a day job, a night job, and a weekend job. His wife and three children worked with him over the years at Art Printing Company as did three of his grandchildren, Don III, Ben, and Sharon.
Don is survived by his daughters, Hilah K. Gatewood (Bob) of Ewing, N.J., Mary Ellen Proctor (Frank) of Roanoke; five grandchildren, H. Donald Thacker III, Benjamin D. Thacker, Sharon Dee Ricks, Hilah M. Divers, and M. Neal Witt Jr.; twelve great-grandchildren.
Hilah and Mary Ellen want to give a very special thank you to our Dad's caregiver, Dianne Brummett ("My Guardian Angel") and "Best Bud" Clifford Carlton for absolutely everything they have done to make Moma and Dad's life the best it could be in their golden years. We love you both!
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 2021, at Oakey's South Chapel with Mr. Mickey Derrow officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 5, 2021, at the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared with the family at
