J. Quarles Obituary

J. Carson Quarles

September 30, 1936 - May 9, 2025

J. Carson Quarles, of Roanoke, VA, claimed the promise of the resurrection on Friday, May 9, 2025. Carson was born in the Buchanan area of Botetourt County on September 30, 1936. He was the son of the late Harry Franklin Quarles and the late Hannah Vivian Keith Quarles.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Norma H. Quarles; and by seven siblings, Elizabeth Q. Watson, Owen F. Quarles, Lewis E. Quarles, Robert J. Quarles, Janet Q. Hall, Dr. Carey L. Quarles, and Rev. Tresa F. Quarles.

He is survived by four children and their spouses: Sharon and Donald Hilliard, Durham, NC, Tamera and Tony Kelly, Fincastle, VA, James Carson II and Wendy Quarles, Roanoke, VA and Deborah and Scott Seidel, Fairfax, VA.

Known as "Graddy", he is survived by nine grandchildren: Elizabeth and Charlie McMillan, and Alan Hilliard; Tyler and Erika Kelly, Kendyl Kelly and fiancé, Conner Herbison; Jack and Paige Quarles, Maggie Quarles and fiancé, Tyler Haiges; Sarah Beth Seidel, Hannah Seidel, and Drew Seidel. He was blessed to have four great-grandchildren: James and Henry McMillan; and Elowyn and Tolson Kelly.

Carson loved the outdoors: he was an avid turkey and deer hunter, fly fisherman and golfer. He was companioned by his beloved hunting dogs. His great love of hunting led him to be active in the National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Virginia Deer Hunters Association. He cherished the many hours that he spent hunting with his hunting companions and dear friends, Gerald Austin of Buchanan and Bobby G. Minter, of Daleville.

Carson fought to preserve our outdoor resources. He was appointed by Governor Allen to serve on the Board of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. He faithfully served as chairman for four years. In 2002, he was recognized by the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate for his services to the VDGIF.

He was a proud veteran of the Naval Reserves, and took great pride that he and his brothers all served in some branch of the military.

Carson had a distinguished banking career of nearly 40 years. He was a respected leader in the Roanoke Valley banking industry, rising to President of the Southwestern Region of the Central Fidelity Bank. Carson generously served his community and church with time and talent on a variety of organization boards for universities, charities, and associations. He was devoted to his church, and was a compassionate person living his life with generosity. He and his wife, Norma, were devoted members of the North Roanoke Baptist Church and valued the friendship and pastoral service of Pastor Daniel Palmer.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory may donate to Good Samaritan Hospice of Roanoke, VA or to the charity of their choice.

Services will be held Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 2 p.m. at North Roanoke Baptist Church, with Pastor Daniel Palmer officiating. Interment will follow services at Fairview Cemetery Buchanan, VA. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.

So saddened to see this today. I knew Carson from our time together at NRBC and was fortunate to also know his beloved wife, Norma. Carson always had a warm smile and we enjoyed many conversations about dogs. I know he will be missed by many.

It was my pleasure to work with Carson for a number of years at the Old Dominion Bankshares. He was a true gentleman, and one of the nicest people I have ever had the honor to know. My deepest sympathies to all of his family. He´s now with his beloved Norma.
