Dear Mrs. McFadden, Jim´s children and grandchildren: I am heartbroken to learn of Jim´s passing; please accept my and my family´s deepest condolences. I was close to his brother, Brian, who lived in Richmond, VA in the 1980s, and I had the great fortune of meeting and getting to know Jim during that time, along with his dear parents and wonderful extended family in Asheboro. He showed me - a shy, quiet 22-year-old - such great kindness and warmth, taking a sincere interest in my life, love of music and animals and plans for the future; I felt that I had known him for years. Tucked away in a treasured photo album, I have a photo with him taken in the summer of 1986. I can absolutely imagine the complete comfort and confidence he gave to his patients over his long and phenomenal career, and, even more importantly, the great gift of love and himself that he gave to his family and pets. I am so grateful that I knew Jim, someone who was devoted to humanity and nature, and who truly left the world a better place. With kindest regards, Karen J. Cheek & Family (Glen Allen, VA)

College roommate 1964-66, folk trio bandmate 1964-1972, dear friend through 1973 when our professional careers took us on separate paths until we reconnected online in 2018 after we both had retired, Jim holds a place in my heart as deep and enduring as that of any non-family member I've ever known. Rest in peace, old friend, and in the assurance that you were, are, and will continue to be loved by all who knew you well while you walked and worked and played among us.
