James Winstead Obituary

James Emery Winstead

January 24, 1944 - October 3, 2024

Our loving husband and father, James Emery Winstead, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Lucas Winstead and James Ernest Winstead

Surviving is his wife, Fran Winstead; son, Jeff Winstead (Stacey); granddaughter, Maddie Winstead; brother, Robert Adams Winstead; and many loving cousins.

A graduate of William Fleming High School in 1962, he went on to complete coursework at both Virginia Tech (Corps of Cadets) and Roanoke College. He proudly served in the United States Army Reserves from 1965 to 1972.

Emery enjoyed a great life, which really started when he met and married Fran, with whom he spent 56 terrific years.

Emery retired from the Mechanical Engineering department at Norfolk Southern after 33 years. His big personality and infectious smile were legendary. He loved his time and friends at the Roanoke YMCA, where he was a member for over 30 years, also serving on the Board. A man of many talents, he was an incredible cook and avid gardener.

He loved his family and friends, and always tried to do right by them. His happy place was Smith Mountain Lake, enjoying wonderful friends, as well as boating. Emery's generous nature has benefited countless individuals and is truly a hallmark of this amazing individual. His physical passing is a tremendous loss, but his spirit resides in our hearts always. We are heartbroken but incredibly grateful for having been blessed with you. Rest in peace.

Emery's memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on Monday, October 7, 2024, at Oakey's South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions in Emery's name to Penn Forest Wesleyan Church. Condolences may be shared with his family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.
