Jimmie Bishop Obituary

Jimmie Thomas Bishop

May 6, 1941 - January 13, 2023

Jimmie "Jim" Thomas Bishop of Bramwell, W.Va., passed away peacefully at home on the morning of January 13, 2023.

Jim was born on May 6, 1941, in Matoaka, W.Va., to Clarence Glenwood Bishop and Pansy Lester Oaks Bishop. He later moved to Roanoke, Va., where he graduated from William Fleming High School. A gifted athlete, he attended Gardner-Webb Jr. College on a football scholarship. From there he went on to wrestle at Appalachian State University. When an injury ended his wrestling career, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Guam. After being honorably discharged he returned to his studies attending East Tennessee State University where he met his wife of 58 years, Joyce O'Dell Bishop. Jim graduated from ETSU with a BS Degree. Always in pursuit of education, he would go on to earn a Masters Degree from Ga. State University and a law degree from The Woodrow Wilson College of Law in Atlanta, Ga. While living and raising his family in Fayetteville, Ga., Jim pursued a variety of additional interests and activities. For over 20 years he officiated high school wrestling and received an award for distinguished service from the Georgia High School Association. Jim also established the first youth wrestling program for the South Metro Wrestling Association. He spent many years as a volunteer fireman. Jim helped to found a Home Owner's Association in his neighborhood and served on the board of directors for many years. Always up for a challenge, Jim found time to study and master house building. He built seven houses in Ga. including one for his brother and one for his daughter and her family. He did all this while working full-time in various law enforcement positions. Jim began his professional career as a Fulton County Probation Officer. From there he went to work at the U.S. Penitentiary, Atlanta as a case manager. Ultimately he retired in 1998 as a Supervising U.S. Probation Officer. Upon his retirement, he and his wife, Joyce moved to Bramwell where they owned and operated the Perry House Bed and Breakfast. Never one to sit still, Jim became actively involved in his community. He served on the board of the Mercer County Solid Waste Commission, the Bramwell Town Council, the Governor's Youth Program, the Bluewell Lions Club (president for one year), and he was the Bramwell Traffic Court Judge. Most notably Jim formed the Bramwell Theatre Corporation and produced Smoke on the Mountain for 20 years.

Jim is survived by his wife, Joyce O'Dell Bishop; his children, Sherry Bishop (Jude Dvorak), Amy Roberts, and Jimmy Bishop; his grandchildren, Kyle Roberts, Alayna Roberts, Brett Roberts, and Ava Dvorak; and his sister, Shirley Bishop Shutt.

Jim's family would like to express their sincere appreciation to their neighbors, friends, and their church family at Bramwell United Methodist Church for their love, support and countless meals. They would also like thank the staff at Compassus for their kind and compassionate care.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the Bramwell Presbyterian Church.

I knew him from both Traveltown and my other "Fleming" friends. What a great guy and friend to many.

I just found out today of Jim's passing. I met Jim when I was hired as a probation officer in N/D GA in 1992. I really enjoyed working with him and I found him to be a funny man. That might surprise some because Jim could be stern, but he always took time to speak to me. I will never forget the supervisors I had the first few years as they left such a lasting impression on me. What I remember most about the leadership was that it was built on teamwork and support. We had a tough job, but I was always supported by this leadership team and for that I am very grateful. "Hoss" was his trademark and I still use it in my vocabulary today. I have lost both of my parents so I hope you can enjoy the time with your mom. Hoss would have wanted that.

Since Jim and I met in 1962, to me he has been the very essence of the word "friend". And what a fierce friend!
And to Joyce, Sherry, Amy please know what a blessing each of you have been to our family. We love you and are holding you and the entire family in our prayers.

I first met Jim around 1975 when I was a state probation officer and we became friends right away. Even supervised a few cases together. He was instrumental in helping me hire on with the federal probation office. He was my friend and later my supervisor. I’ve missed Jimmie T since his retirement. My deepest sympathies to Amy, Joyce and family.

I worked with Jim in the probation office until he retired in 1998. He was hired one year before me
And when I began service it was Jim that was appointed as my mentor . We instantly became best friends and remained that way throughout my time in the probation office and into retirement.
Bishop , as we all called him was one of the best men in my wedding ( I had three)
We worked together, played together, and socialized together during my time as a probation officer. We routinely met at 6:30AM on Monday Wednesday and Friday for years to run the streets and sidewalks of Atlanta.
I often thought that Bishop was more than just a friend. I probably spent more time with him and my other probation officer friends than I did with my own family due to our work schedule.
Bishop and my friends became a surrogate family and would always be there for each other if help was needed.
I drank many a beer with Bishop which would always lead to laughs and fun. I can hear him now singing his favorite verse after he had a few.
“There ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone “
I’m not sure if that is a song or verse but he would always sing it.
I have lost family members in my life but the pain of losing Bishop feels the same. He was a terrific person, tremendous husband and father and one of the best friends that I could have hoped for in my life.
To Joyce, Sherry,Amy, and Jimmy I am at a loss for words . I just want you to know how much he impacted me and others in the office.Jim was a terrific person and such a good friend.
When my time comes I hope he will again be my mentor in my next life.
