Joseph Gorman Obituary

Joseph Vincent (Joe) Gorman Jr., 80, of Blacksburg, Va., died on Sunday, December 20, 2009, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Lynchburg, Va., on August 1, 1929, to the late Joseph Vincent Sr. and Mary Desmond Gorman. He was also preceded in death by two sisters. Joe was retired manager of International Programs with Hercules Aerospace Company and was currently Chairman of the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority, the New River Resource Authority, Past Chairman of New RiverHighlands Resource Conservation and Development Council, and a member of BlacksburgMontgomery County Emergency Planning Committee. During his lifetime he served his church, St. Mary's Catholic Church as an usher for 50 years, Community-Blacksburg, Town Council (1966 to 1974) (Vice Mayor) and Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, 1992 to 1999 (Chairman), Company-Hercules Aerospace Company for 39 years, and United States Army Sergeant First Class from 1954 to 1962. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jeanette Colona Gorman, of Blacksburg; two sisters, Henrietta Weidman, of Mississippi, and Marguerite Miletic, of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; three brothers, Jerry Gorman, of Richmond, Paul Gorman, of Lynchburg, and Bill Gorman, of Newport News, Va.; and 23 nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Remi Sojka officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Fire Department, 2700 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, Va. 24060 or the Blacksburg Rescue Squad, 200 Progress Street, NE, Blacksburg, Va. 24060.
