Joyce Hudson Obituary

Joyce Painter Hudson

January 2, 1938 - March 23, 2025

Joyce Painter Hudson passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at the age of 87.

Born in Roanoke, VA, Joyce spent most of her life in the Roanoke and New River Valley area. In recent years, she moved to the Charlotte suburbs of South Carolina to be closer to her daughter and family.

A graduate of William Fleming High School and National Business College, Joyce had a fulfilling career in accounting. She worked at ITT, where she met her husband, Don Hudson, and later Kroger, where she eventually retired.

Joyce was a devoted wife to Don Hudson, with whom she shared 56 wonderful years of marriage. She was known for her kindness, warmth, and unwavering faith. Joyce dedicated her life to her family and to serving others. She found great joy in cooking, entertaining, and gardening, always creating an environment of love and hospitality. A talented musician, Joyce played the piano for many years at her father's church, sharing her gift with others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Virginia Morgan Painter; her husband, Don Hudson; her sister, Gloria Beckner; and her stepson, Don Michael Hudson.

Joyce leaves behind a loving family, Scott Hudson (Heather), Jodi Crown (Taylor), and Beth Proffitt (George). She was a cherished grandmother to Michael Hudson, Jordan Proffitt, Emily Proffitt, Matthew Hudson, Laurel Hudson, Jeremy Hudson, Sam Crown, and Addison Crown. Her love extended to her sister, Charlotte Wimmer; niece, Susan Ribelin (Chip); and nephew, Rob Gilbert (Amy). Although Joyce, has left this world, her spirit remains in the hearts of those who loved her, and her legacy will continue in the lives of her beloved grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to honor Joyce's life at Oakey's North Chapel on Peters Creek Road, Roanoke. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2025. Visitation hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2025, and on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 1 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

In loving memory of Joyce, whom we will remember fondly. She was a lovely lady, and always had a bright smile, kind heart, and funny, loving stories of her family and childhood on the mountain. May God rest your soul in His light, and comfort your family in their loss.
