Leland Lacy Obituary

Leland Bailey Lacy, 60, of Blacksburg, Va., departed this life on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, Va., after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Bluefield, W.Va., on October 30, 1949, and grew up in Rock, W.Va., the only child of the late Robert Lee and Mary Violet Bailey Lacy. He was a 1967 graduate of Montcalm High School; earned an Associate Degree from Bluefield College in Engineering; a BS Degree in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; returned to VPI & SU to complete his pre-pharmacy studies; and in 1977 earned a Doctorate of Pharmacy from Mercer University School of Pharmacy in Atlanta, Ga.
He was most recently employed at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, Va. He previously worked at Rite Aid Pharmacy in Pearisburg and Kroger Pharmacy at Smith Mountain Lake. Leland was the happiest during his 20 years of working beside his dear friend, George Mauney, when they operated and co-owned Hometown Pharmacies located in Pembroke, Narrows, and Peterstown with Burl Compton and Owen McKay.
"Lee" lived life as a series of special moments, cherishing friends and family. He had a generous heart and a quick smile and wit. His laughter would light up a room. He was always a great hugger. He loved to study the history and culture of Native Americans and was an avid student of early American history and the National Park Service. He enjoyed photography, reconstructing his own cabin from authentic hand-hewn logs, and watercraft recreation.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife and best friend of 39 years and childhood friend since first grade and sweetheart since tenth grade, Debra Johnson Lacy; his father-in-law, Robert R. Johnson, and his companion, Pat McQuown, of Supply, N.C.; his brotherin-law, Bobby Johnson, of Bluefield, W.Va.; his maternal uncle, Lucian P. Bailey, of Bluefield, Va.; his paternal aunt, Mable Lacy Helmondollar, of Bluefield, W.Va.; his aunts by marriage, Hazel Lacy and Hattie Lacy, of Bluefield, W.Va.; many Lacy, Bailey, and Smith cousins near and dear; his dear friends, George and Suzan Mauney, Alan and Terry McKay, Kerry Brisco, Burl Compton, and Owen McKay; his beloved co-workers, Amy Westmoreland, Vickie Miller, Beth Cupp, and Stephanie Tatum; and his five godchildren, Jennifer McKay Muffler, Christy McKay Usa, Laura McKay, Matt McKay, and Patrick Leland Mauney.
Graveside Services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Friday, June 4, 2010, in Monte Vista Cemetery located on Old Bluefield-Princeton Road, Bluefield, W.Va., with Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow Street, Pembroke, Va., on Thursday evening, June 3, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, Tenn. 38148-0142. Online condolences may be sent to kendallfuneralhome.com.

It is with great sorrow that I learned today of the passing of Lee Lacy. Lee was incredibly patient and kind to me as I was breaking into the pharmaceutical business, I will always appreciate his counsel and his kindness. Lee was always so understanding. Although I have not seen him in several years I never forgot this gracious and warm human being. He was definitely one of the good guys.

THE JOY OF UNSELFISH GIVING'
TIME IS NOT MEASURED BY THE YEARS THAT YOU LIVE BUT BY THE DEEDS THAT YOU DO
AND THE JOY THAT YOU GIVE...
AND EACH DAY AS IT COMES BRINGS A CHANCE TO EACH ONE TO LOVE TO THE FULLEST,LEAVING NOTHING UN DONE
THAT WOULD BRIGHTEN THE LIFE OR LIGHTEN THE LIFE OR LIGHTEN THE LOAD OF SOME WEARY TRAVELER LOST ON LIFES ROAD- SO WHAT DOES IT MATTER HOW LONG
WE LIVE IF AS LONG AS WE GIVE WE UNSELFISHLY GIVE.
THIS IS YOU LACEY THANKS FOR

What a sad day, to hear of such a beautiful man's passing. Lee was a joy to work with and brought such happiness and love to people he knew. I'll miss his smiling face, and his kind gentle heart. I started out at a tech and worked with him quite often, then eventually he talked me into pharmacy school...and even helped me get my foot in the door. This world has truely lost an Angel here on earth. No matter how difficult life for us all will be here with out him, he is in Heaven where he can look down on everyone with love forever. We will miss you dearly Leland Lacy, it was an honor to get to know you over the years, and I hope to be able to see you again someday. God Bless.

I am so sorry to hear about Lee. He was a wonderful person. I always looked forward to pulling up at Hometown and seeing Lee's car there. I knew it was going to be a good day because he was always fun to work with. I am so thankful that he organzied the Hometown Pharmacy Reunion. It was nice to see everyone and I was glad to get to see him one last time. Take care Debbie and enjoy the memories of Lee Lacy! He was a good and kind man.

Debbie,
We are so saddened at the loss of Lee. What a special person, that had a huge impact on Todd, beginning with Hometown Pharmacy. Lee never met a stranger, and always knew how to brighten your day. We were lucky that Lee was part of our lives, and imagining his smiling face not being around, just doesn't seem right. We will miss Lee, and you are in our prayers during this difficult time.

Lee was always cheery and helpful whenever I spoke with him at the hospital. I am disappointed that I didn't get to know him better. He will be missed terribly at Giles Hospital and also at Carilion New River Valley Pharmacy. My prayers are with you during this difficult time.
