Mark Hurd Obituary

Mark Steven Hurd

November 16, 1955 - April 17, 2024

Mark S. Hurd, 68, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, surrounded by his family at home.

Son of the late Milton Lewis Sr. and Thelma Hurd, he was born on November 16, 1955, in Roanoke, Virginia. Mark was the second born of their six children. He loved to play sports, especially baseball, basketball, and later golf. His involvement in a neighborhood basketball game is where he first met his loving wife of 49 years, Vicki Breeden. Mark had her hooked with that rainbow jumper! They were blessed with three children and one grandchild. His knowledge and guidance were the foundation of his family. The latter was most often filled with rare idioms that really made you think and laugh!

He had a passion for understanding how machines worked and put forth relentless effort in each job he performed throughout his years as a refrigeration mechanic, first at Kessler Refrigeration and later Kroger. In retirement, he enjoyed time with his family and many lifelong friends, especially when it involved "chasing that little white ball"!

He was preceded to heaven by his mother and father, and brother, John Edward. He is survived by his wife, Vicki; their children, Brent Steven Hurd of Geneva, Fla., Lindsey Hurd Layman and husband, John, and Joshua Marc Hurd of Alexandria, Va.; his favorite grandchild, Luke Henry Layman; brother, Milton (Lewis) Hurd Jr. and wife, Dolores; sisters, Nancy Wertz and husband, Robin, Karen Hurd and wife, Angie, and Victoria Hurd; as well as many nieces and nephews.

It was his wish that we would laugh, reminisce, and smile together during this time. To honor this wish, the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Oakey's East Chapel, 5188 Cloverdale Road, Roanoke, VA 24019. Interment will be private.
