Marvin L. COOK

Marvin L. (Pete) Cook, 87, of Roanoke, passed peacefully from this earth Monday evening, September 2, 2013. Pete was born in Botetourt County December 15, 1925, to the late Oscar Lee Cook and Florence Dooley Cook. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn Kelley Cook; his brother, Johnny R. Cook; and an infant sister. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Vivian Cundiff "Deany" Cook; sons, A. Wayne (Janine) Cook, Dennis (Marilyn) Cook; daughter, Christi (Wally) Vandegrift; sister, Genell Via. Also surviving are stepdaughters, Karen Gomes and Cheryl (Jeff) Thompson; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pete was a proud Veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in the European Theater. He enjoyed sharing stories regarding old friends and happy times. During his working years, Pete held supervisory positions with the Norfolk and Western, and then Norfolk Southern Railroad, in Williamson, W.Va., Brewster, Ohio, as well as in Norfolk, Lynchburg, and Roanoke. He enjoyed traveling, saltwater fishing, and visiting with his family. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
The family would like to express their thanks to the Virginia Veterans Care Center for their care and support of Pete.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Oakey's North Chapel with Pastor Everett Kier officiating. Interment will be held in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Military Honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
