Mary Gwyn Obituary

Mary Ann Harmon Gwyn

February 28, 2026

Mary Ann Harmon Gwyn, 82, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Christopher Clark Shires and Lula May Baker Shires; two brothers, Ed Shires and Max Shires; and two daughters-in-law, Kim Harmon and Angie Harmon.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 40 years, Roy M. Gwyn; two sons, Christopher D. Harmon (wife, Sonia Harmon) and Michael K. Harmon; four grandchildren, Courtney Harmon (Justin), Sara Massenburg (Jeremy), Michael Harmon II, and Christopher Harmon; three great-grandchildren, Hallie Teal, Noah Massenburg, and Coleman Massenburg; one brother, Benny Shires; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was born in Martinsville, Virginia and had lived in Roanoke since 1974. After moving to Roanoke, she joined First Baptist Church of Roanoke where she was an active member, participating in various committees and serving as a 4th grade Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. Mary Ann was a devoted Baptist who read her Bible daily and tried her best to live her life with Christian principles and values.

She was the co-owner and broker at Gwyn & Harmon, Realtors where she was awarded the Multi-Million Dollar Producer Award numerous times over the years. She loved her job and the connections it allowed her to make; her family often joked that she could not leave the house without seeing at least one person she had sold a house over the years. She enjoyed her bowling league for many years and was on the Hidden Valley Country Club Board of Directors where she enjoyed golfing.

She had an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor and surrounded herself with people who made her laugh. She had a unique ability to make everyone around her feel special, which is evident in the countless friendships she maintained throughout the years. She was a fantastic cook who could execute a full Thanksgiving meal for 20 without breaking a sweat and fostered a love for cooking in her children and grandchildren.

She was a wonderful mother to her sons and "Mimi" to her grandchildren, and she will be so missed.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Oakey's South Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, March 9, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Roanoke (Faith Chapel). Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.

In lieu of food and flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.Oakeys.com.
