May Justice Obituary

May Rossiter Meier Justice

October 8, 2021

May Rossiter Meier Justice, 85, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 8, 2021.

May was born in 1936 in Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, James Robert Justice, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur George Meier (Mary Clayton Jones Meier).

She is survived by her daughter, Judith Clayton Justice Nowlin and her husband, George Preston Nowlin III, of Charlottesville, Virginia; her son, James Robert Justice Jr. of Sausalito, California; and grandsons, George Preston Nowlin IV, Robert Burton Nowlin, and John Clayton Nowlin. She also leaves behind her cherished friend, Dr. David Parrish Minichan.

May majored in voice at Mary Washington College and Hollins College. She was a soprano soloist at First Presbyterian Church, South Roanoke Methodist Church and St. John's Episcopal Church and sang on television and for many Roanoke Valley organizations. At St. John's, May sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and served as President of the Women of the Church in 1992 during the church's centennial year.

She was on the Roanoke Rescue Mission Board of Directors for almost 14 years and remained involved throughout the rest of her life.

May was active in the Junior League of Roanoke, was a past President of the Modern Arts Club, and served as Chair of the Roanoke Christian Women's Clubs. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Daughters of the American Revolution (Nancy Christian Fleming Chapter), the Jamestowne Society, the Dames of the Magna Carta and the Colonial Order of the Crown (The Charlemagne Society).

May especially treasured her time as President and Area Representative of the Christian Women's Club. For 20 years she travelled five states throughout the southeast with other women sharing stories of how and when they became Christian.

Among all her interests, the most important was seeking knowledge of the Bible. May attended many Bible classes which nourished her faith in Jesus as her Lord, Savior, and best friend. Some of her favorite verses were Psalms 34:4, Proverbs 3:5-6, Isaiah 12:2, John 3:16 and 3:36, Romans 3:23 and 8:28, First Corinthians 15:1-4, and Philippians 4:6-8 and 4:13.

The family will receive visitors from 5 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at St. John's Episcopal Church. Interment will be private at Evergreen Burial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 257, Roanoke, VA 24002 or to the Rescue Mission of Roanoke, Inc., P.O. Box 11525, Roanoke, VA 24022-1525. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.oakeys.com.

To add to my initial words about May two years ago, I will submit the following. May and I were the same age and were friends through life, particularly during our younger years. Our mothers were close friends. While May attended schools in Salem I was in Roanoke and in one of the last Jefferson High School classes. During those years we still shared our likes and dislikes and appreciated each others advice. We were both at First Presbyterian Church growing up, and later we were Confirmed in the Episcopal Church in cities where we were living at the time. We went in different geographical directions in college and my post-graduate years in Baltimore. We both married. I remember going to her wedding reception at her home, and she and Bob and my wife Nancy and I had occasional visits thereafter until my wife died four years ago and Bob had passed. She always had a deep concern about medical problems of her family and would discuss them by phone after I had moved and practiced medicine in Charlotte,NC. Retrospectively, she was a life-time friend and faithful to her religious beliefs. I'm sure she has left a void in the lives of her family and friends.

May was my special friend from Christian Women´s Club! So devoted to her Lord... the last time I saw her was at Lowe´s buying our spring flowers and had a great conversation.
May God´s care be yours as you adjust to her not being here with you. What a genuine and beautiful lady, always exuding God´s love!
