Nicholas Street

Nicholas D. Street, age 91, passed away on February 4, 2023, surrounded by loving family members at his home in Naples, Florida. A proud native of Southwest Virginia, Mr. Street was born on July 19, 1931, to W.A. and Frankie Mae Street. His childhood was spent in Grundy, Virginia, with his close-knit family which included seven siblings.
Mr. Street graduated from Grundy High School in 1949 before enrolling at what was then Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and graduated in 1953. Mr. Street proudly served his country during his four years of active service in the U.S. Air Force and additional years in the Air Force Reserve. His love of flying was firmly established, and he continued to fly for many years in both personal and corporate roles.
A graduate of the University of Richmond Law School, Mr. Street returned to Grundy in the early 1960s, eventually establishing the law firm of Street, Street & Street with his brothers, H.A. and Eugene. He also became involved in the coal industry and was a founding partner in United Coal Company, which later became The United Company. Mr. Street enjoyed rewarding and successful careers in the law and energy fields until his retirement in 2009.
Mr. Street was a longtime advocate for his beloved hometown of Grundy and Southwest Virginia in general. He was a generous supporter of many charitable causes including the arts, health care, and education. In 2022, Virginia Tech awarded Mr. Street its highest honor, the Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) Medal, for his longstanding support of and service to the University.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Street was predeceased by sisters, Gaynell S. Fowler and Wanda S. Norris, and brothers, Victor H. Street, Raymond J. Street, H.A. Street, and Eugene K. Street. He is survived by his wife, Fay H. Street; sons, Robert D. Street (Kimber) and David A. Street (Pear Aivey); and daughter, Lauren S. Wagner (Lake). He is also survived by grandchildren, Ken Street (Calla), Emily Williams (Patrick), Elisa Masias (Chalo), Oliviah Street, Nicholas Street, Edward Street, Emmey Siek-Street, and Maxwel Siek-Street, as well as seven great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include brother, Dr. Russell K. Street (Connie); sister-in-law, Jackie W. Street, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services for Nicholas Street will be held at Buchanan First Presbyterian Church in Grundy, Virginia, on Friday, February 10, 2023. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. in the fellowship hall, with the funeral service following in the sanctuary at 12 p.m. Active pallbearers will include Joseph W. Bowman, James R. Fortune, Thomas D. Griffin, Thomas R. Scott, and Mr. Street's nephews.
Interment will immediately follow at Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, contributions in Mr. Street's memory may be made to benefit the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets or Department of Athletics. Street and indicate its direction to either the VTCC Annual Scholarship Fund or the Hokie Athletic Scholarship Fund.
