Raymond Kemett Totten
August 30, 1941 - November 28, 2025
Early on November 28, 2025, Raymond Kemett Totten, of Roanoke, VA went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Raymond was visiting his daughter's family in Gloucester County, for Thanksgiving when he suffered an acute illness on Wednesday night. Raymond went to be the Lord early Friday morning, the 28th. Born August 30, 1941 in Saltville, VA to the late K.O. "Pie" and Mary Sue Sanders Totten. Graduated in 1963 from Virginia Tech, served with the National Guard six years, and retired after 36 years' service as a tax accountant supervisor with American Electric Power Company in Roanoke.
Raymond and Sue met in high school. Sue was the girl next door. While driving her back to Radford University, Raymond asked Sue out on a date, and they were married on the day of his graduation from Virginia Tech. Raymond was a lifelong supporter and local leader of the Boy Scouts of America and was an Eagle Scout, also a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Raymond enjoyed traveling, cruising, camping, hiking, and walking and cherished camping trips to the mountains and the beach with his children and grandchildren. An avid reader, writer, writing his family history, and also studied the Bible daily. A lifelong Hokie, he followed Virginia Tech sports, and when he and Sue retired, they enjoyed being season ticket holders for the Hokie football seasons. Raymond and Sue achieved their goal of visiting each of the 50 states. Highlights of traveling were three cruises to Alaska, additional cruises, trips to the National Parks, while also enjoying many trips with good friends Bob and Brenda Daniel. Raymond was a man full of wisdom and loved to encourage his family to follow their dreams. Each family member sought his advice on life decisions. The Totten's are members of Northview UMC in Roanoke, where they have lived for 56 years.
In addition to his parents, brother, Charles W. "Charlie Bill" Totten preceded him in death.
Raymond is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sue; son, Kevin Totten, Fire Captain of Salem City (retired) residing in Craig County, VA; daughter, Karen Croxton, son-in-law, Richard, and grandchildren Warren, Glynnie, and Garrett Croxton of Gloucester; and the Croxton's son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, Bobby, Sterling, Crew, Hudson Yager of Raleigh, NC.; special cousin, Thomas William Totten (Tommie Lee Merion, VA) as well many other extended and loved family members.
The family will receive friends at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA 24019, on Friday, December 5, 2025 at 11 a.m., prior to Raymond's Celebration of Life service officiated by the Reverend Dr Richard Croxton, at 12 noon. Interment will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday December 6, 2025, Mount Rose Cemetery, 10069 Crescent Road, Glade Spring, VA 24340.
