This news is truly sorrowful and sad.
.
Gary was a reserve point guard on Westtown School's varsity basketball team, and was instrumental in winning that team's only overtime game, against St. Elizabeth's from Wilmington, DE. By memory nearly sixty years later, so I am confident of the substance but no longer certain I have it verbatim, the headline on the story in the Wilmington paper's sports section was something like, "Westtown's 5'5" Cook sinks St. Elizabeth's five." He kept getting fouled and hit both end of the one and one every time. He scored ten points in the OT. Cool as a cucumber in a refrigerator and perfect from the line every time. That team ended its season undefeated.
