Robert Mervyn Bird, 92, of Roanoke, Virginia, died at home on Tuesday, January 26, 2021.
He was a sailor, pilot, firefighter, and student of history. Robert worked for 33 years as an engineer at the IBM Corporation where he contributed to the effort that landed a man on the moon. He was a World War II veteran and proud member of the storied 31st Infantry Regiment.
He is survived by his children, William Bird, Carol Riddell, and Alison Williams; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Knapp Bird, and his children, David Bird and Joel Bird. Online condolences may be made at www.oakeys.com.
