Robert Whiting Obituary

Robert Harold "Bob" Whiting

April 10, 1947 - June 25, 2024

Robert H. "Bob" Whiting, 77, of Roanoke, VA, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. He was born in Phillipsburg, NJ, on April 10, 1947, to Harold Whiting and Eleanor Elizabeth Slater, who preceded him in death.

Bob leaves behind two children, Jason Whiting (Jessica) and Bethanne Whiting, and his two grandchildren, George and Bennett, whom he adored. He is also survived by his sister, Page E. Whiting (Jeanne); his brother, Richard Whiting (Leonard); and his dear friends and neighbors.

Bob dedicated his entire working life to what was United Telephone before becoming Sprint, and then Embarq. Prior to starting his career, Bob served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War where he performed logistic support for combat troops.

When he wasn't working, Bob was a man of simple tastes, working around the house, cooking, working on cars, and watching sports. He particularly enjoyed football, which he played in high school, NASCAR, and any other form of automobile racing. Bob also found immense joy in cooking. Bob lived most of his life in Pennsylvania but moved to Roanoke two years ago to be close to his grandchildren.

Despite being plagued with several hip surgeries in the last five years of his life, Bob remained upbeat. While Bob often kept to himself, his friendly and zero-drama demeanor endeared him to those who knew him in the neighborhood. What Bob lacked in overt affection; he made up for with thoughtful gestures that revealed his heart.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held at a later date and will be arranged by his family in Roanoke, Virginia. Condolences may be shared with his family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.
