S. Stump Obituary

S. Wayne Stump, 80, of Roanoke, Va., died on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, after a brief illness. He was born on September 16, 1929, in Roanoke. Wayne is the seventh son of the late Montery Bohon and William Asa Stump. Wayne is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Waldis Stump; and seven children, Suzanne Stump Rowland (John), Richard Wayne (Debbie), Jeffrey Michael (Maureen), Sarah Stump Haley (Jeff), of Danville, Va., Andrew William (Joy), of Clinton, N.J., Jennifer Stump Miller (Les), and Paul Arthur (Pamala); 14 grandchildren, Christopher Rowland (Emily), Daniel Rowland (Melissa), Ricky Stump, Neil Stump, Jason Stump (fiancée, Andrea), Matthew Stump (fiancée, Emily), Jeffrey and Catherine Haley, Danielle and Dylan Stump, Les, Will, and Drew Miller, and Nicholas Stump; and great-grandchildren, Johnny, Colleen, and Luke Rowland, Baylee and Morgan Rowland, and Ryland Stump. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Christine Stump, of Callaway, Va., Norma Stump, of Florida, and Beverly Hayes (Jim), of Tampa, Fla.; and special cousin, Dave Waldis. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Wayne was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson High School and served his country in the United States Navy as a Radar Operator aboard the USS Vogelgesang. He was Honorably Discharged in 1952. He worked for Sears and Roebuck for many years prior to his employment with the Macke Company where he served for 20 years. He was a member of Council 562 Knights of Columbus, holding all chairs in the local council as well as all elected offices for the State of Virginia, including State Deputy in 1977 to 1978. On the Fourth Degree level, Wayne served as Faithful Navigator for the Roanoke Assembly and on the Degree Team for the jurisdiction of Virginia. One of Wayne's proudest accomplishments within the Knights of Columbus was the establishment of the Father Michael J. Bader Scholarship Fund. In a five year period, he personally secured over $100,000.00 to aid college freshmen with the pursuit of higher education.
Wayne was a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Parish for over 53 years having served as lector, building committee member, and liaison to Roanoke Catholic School.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, celebrated by Monsignor Joseph P. Lehman. A reception will be held in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the Mass. Burial will follow the reception at St. Andrew's Cemetery.
The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Father Michael J. Bader Scholarship Fund, c/o Council 562 Knights of Columbus, P.O. Box 715, Roanoke, Va. 24004. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

Jean:
I saw Don Mountcastle @ Lowes today and he informed me of Wayne's death. I was on vacation that week and did not see the notice.

I remember fondly the good times Wayne, Dave, Bill & I had in the Macke Sales Dept.

The scholorship fund that Wayne established is a wonderful legacy.

I enjoyed his company.

Regards,
Chris Kidd
