Stephen Douglas Hurd

Stephen D. Hurd, 74, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

Steve was born on December 8, 1949, to Douglas Hurd and Virginia Bennett Hurd. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved sister, Hope Ann Hurd Paige; and his sweet aunt, Dot Hogan who looked after and worried about Steve his entire life.

He is survived by numerous cousins throughout the country along with his niece, Krista Paige of West Palm Beach, Fla. Steve's military service inspired Krista to join the United States Army.

Steve was a lifelong resident of Roanoke, a 1969 graduate of William Fleming High School and a United States Air Force Veteran. During the Vietnam War he served in Guam and at Dover Air Force Base.

Steve enjoyed going to the movies, watching any sport on TV, eating out, and especially taking his dad to the Salem Avalanche baseball games. His greatest joy came from spending time with his niece, Krista, whenever she came to visit.

The family would like to thank Carrington Place at Botetourt Commons and Pheasant Ridge Assisted Living for taking such good care of Steve the past few years. And to his cousin, Susan Snow, for stepping up to manage his affairs when he became unable to do so.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 15, 2024, from 1:30 until 2 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel. A Funeral Service will follow there at 2 p.m. with his cousin, Pastor Rodger Hogan, officiating. Immediately following, Steve will be laid to rest with Full Military Honors at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
