Theodore Alberts Obituary

Theodore "Ted" Richard Alberts

May 10, 1943 - February 19, 2022

Theodore "Ted" R. Alberts, NRCC Retired Professor of Welding Technology, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 19, 2022. He was born to the late Ted and Rose Alberts on May 10, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois. His parents, and sister, Judith Mills, precede him in death, along with his nephew, Tim Mills.

He is survived by his brother, Lawrence Alberts, and niece, Meggen Mills, both of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by his loving sons, Joshua Alberts and Matthew Alberts of Radford, along with his loving wife, Bonnie. Ted and Bonnie were married for 55 years.

Ted served in the U.S. Army from 1966-68 and was stationed in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

He graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, and a Masters of Science.

He taught Welding Technology for 36 years in Illinois, Texas, and Virginia, where he retired from teaching at New River Community College, Dublin, Va. in 2009. He would always say, "Ted's my name and Welding is my game." He also worked for Chicago Bridge and Iron (CBI) as a Quality Assurance Engineer from 1980-82.

Early in his career he joined the American Welding Society and was a member for 48 years. He became a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and Certified Welding Educator (CWE) through the Society. He served two years as a Director of District 4 which included portions of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, serving on the AWS Board of Directors, representing the voice of the members. He also served in many volunteer leadership roles in the Southwestern Virginia Section.

Ted had a love for Astronomy and for many years he assisted with visitors and gave tours at the D.C. Wysor Observatory in Dublin, Va. He was also a life-long Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls, and Chicago Cubs Fan.

Ted was also a member of the wonderful Dublin United Methodist Church since 1988.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to Dublin United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 577, Dublin, VA 24084, or St. Jude's 800-608-3023.

My condolences to Bonnie & Family.
Ted and my father were good friends by way of AWS (American Welding Society) - they worked together professionally and admired and respected each other tremendously.
My father and mother always spoke of good memories and times they've all spent together.
Both of my parents have now passed, so I would like to think that perhaps Ted and Jay are now happily discussing highly technical welding issues!

Thinking of Ted always brings a smile to my face. John and I loved the time spent with Ted and Bonnie, Josh and Matt talking about gardening, astronomy, books, politics, the Army, and the easiest, healthiest recipes. Ted welded a 5 inch band to make it possible for John to cook 25 lb. turkeys on the Weber grill. Tomato raising contests were great fun. Phone calls and visits kept us connected over the years and continued with Ted's participation until his recent hospitalization. Love you guys.

Bonnie, Joshua and Matthew : Joanie and Bill are shocked and saddened with the passing of our life long friend Teddy. Our friendship began at Central Jr High in 5 th grade.Ted was a great friend and was the ideal kid to grow up with. So cool! He was the king when it came to having parties and we spent many days and nights at both of the Alberts houses in Evergreen. His Mom and Dad were great people and put up with our shenanigans! Ted was so easy to get along with and was truly a special person. Joanie and I offer our deepest sympathy and our thoughts and prayers are with the Alberts family.

To Mrs. Bonnie, Josh and Matt,
We are so sorry to hear about Ted passing away. Ted was such a special man. We love how he welded our girl’s names into ornaments. These ornaments are on their bedroom doors, and proudly displayed for all to see. He will be truly missed on Smith Ave.!
