Walter Payne Obituary

Walter Payne Jr., 95, of Roanoke, was born on October 21, 1915 and died on Tuesday, March 29, 2011. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and retired from Norfolk and Western Railway after 39 years of service. Walter was a long time member of Second Presbyterian Church and the John Knox Bible Class. He was a Past President and member of the Big Lick Kiwanis Club and volunteered with the LOA Meals on Wheels. Walter was also a member and Past Master of the Vinton Lodge #204 A.F. & A.M. and numerous other Masonic organizations. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Douglas McCluer Payne; his parents, Walter Payne Sr. and Lola Aliff Payne; his brothers, George W. Payne, Alfred L. (Bill) Payne and Elmer R. Payne; his sisters, Myrtle A. Payne, Rebecca P. Allen and Harriett K. Ferguson; his brothers-inlaw, Chester P. McCluer and Robert S. McCluer; and his sisters-in-law, Nell M. Sherrard and Collette M. Irvin. Walter is survived by his niece, Macon Allen; his special nephew, Walter L. Ferguson; his special niece, Douglas F. Powell; and numerous other nieces and nephews. The family suggests that those preferring memorial contributions to consider the Second Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice. Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Sherwood Memorial Park conducted by L. Gerald Carter, CLP and Dr. William R. Klein.
