Janet Benson Obituary

JANET "JAN" BROWN BENSON

LUMBERTON — Janet "Jan" Brown Benson, age 83, of Lumberton, NC, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 23, 2023, at her home. Raised in Crawford, TX, she was the oldest of two daughters born to the late Glenn & Dorothy Brown.

After graduating from Crawford High School, Jan went on to study business administration at Baylor University, graduating in 1963. Shortly after graduation from Baylor University, she attended the Baptist World Youth Conference in Beirut, Lebanon. She went on tour 17 countries with representatives from Texas University and Baylor University. Soon after returning home, she began working at North American Aviation with Rocketdyne. During her employment, she had the privilege of working with the Apollo Program and what would later become the first manned mission to space.

In 1964, she married Burritt "Burt" Ellis Benson, Jr. after meeting him on a blind date. They began a construction business in North Carolina, Benson Construction, Inc., where Jan became Vice President of the company. She was most often referred to as "Mrs. B" by many of the employees at Benson Construction.

Jan built a strong network of friends over the years. She especially enjoyed spending time with the Shady Rest Group and her best friends, Marylyn Britt. Over the years, Jan was not only active in her church and Sunday School class, but the community as well, volunteering at the hospital and tutoring. Her life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32 which states "And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ."

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jill Brown.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Burt Benson of the home; her children: Burritt "Bucky" E. Benson III and wife Sara of Lumberton, NC, Amy Benson of New Bern, NC, and Stephen Benson of Lumberton, NC; her grandchildren: Ellis Benson, Sarahgrace Mitchell (Ty), Emily Snipes, and Caleb Benson; and the employees of Benson Construction.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at 10:30 AM at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton, NC with Pastor Jeff Blackburn officiating. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the graveside following the service.
