PAULINE BULLARD LOCKLEAR
MAXTON — Ms. Pauline (Paul) Bullard Locklear, 83, of 701 Onnie and Joe Road, Maxton (Prospect) N.C., was born March 4, 1934, to the late Ang and Anna Bullard, peacefully departed this life on March 29, 2017.
The funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Prospect United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her son, Dexter Earl Locklear.
Ms. Locklear leaves to cherish her memories her granddaughter, Sierra Frizzell, (Brian); two grandsons, Dexter Locklear and Tyler Locklear; a great-grandson, Chadon Locklear; a sister, Patricia Cavan; and a brother, Ang Bullard.
Ms. Locklear was a respected member of the Prospect Community and a proud Lumbee advocate. Locklear graduated valedictorian of her 1950 class at Prospect High School, just a few weeks past her 16th birthday.
A couple months later, she headed west to Pfeiffer College, displaying an array of basketball skills taught to her on the dirt courts of Prospect. She was one of the first people of color to play college sports at an all-white institution in North Carolina. She went on to be inducted into the Robeson County Sports Hall of Fame. Along with teaching English and serving as librarian in Robeson and Hoke County Public School Systems. Pauline was a director and was instrumental for the founding of the Native American Resource Center at UNC Pembroke. Ms. Pauline also served as a member of the Lumbee Tribal Elders Council. She enjoyed 32 years of retirement, fishing, politicking, mentoring, spending time with her sister and talking with people, educating them on their culture and family.
The family will receive friends 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Prospect United Methodist Church.

Pauline was so much fun to be around and was always so uplifting. I will always cherish the memories of sitting on Mr. Ang's porch discussing Prospect, life, religion and politics. And she certainly knew her politics. I will miss you Pauline.
