Dan Gaby, 76, of Akron, passed at 8:34 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2024, at Lutheran Hospital of Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
Dan was born on November 16, 1947, in Logansport, Indiana, to the late Russell and Audrey (Weaver) Gaby. He graduated from Logansport High School and began working at the Exide Battery Factory in Logansport until its closure. He then became a supervisor in Frankfort for Exide for three years. During that time he married Barbara Gray on July 10, 1982, in the Akron Church of God.
From 1993, Dan served as the assistant superintendent for the town of Akron. Even after retiring in 2013, he continued working daily until recently. He was known for his friendly demeanor and dedication to the community. Dan held water licensing and certifications for the town and was also a member of the Henry Township Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, using his father-in-law's department number, which had been retired. His favorite truck was "Tanker 4."
Dan and Barb enjoyed competitive card games together, as well as playing pinochle with his brothers for hours. He played softball at Riverside Park in Logansport and even raced stock cars in the Logansport area and Warsaw. He cherished time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His hobbies included collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia and fire-related items. Additionally, he was an avid lottery scratch-off player and attended retirees' breakfasts for Exide.
He is survived by his wife Barb Gaby of Akron; children Deb and husband Carl Auten of Walton, Lisa and husband Shayne Nixon of Logansport, Sherri and Bill Ramsey of Akron, and Bev and Verlin Ramsey of Akron; grandchildren Travis and Alyssa Ramsey, Aaron Ramsey, Wes Ramsey (Dana), Ashley and husband Josh Derf, Heather and husband Mark Grandstaff, Megan Ramsey, Kari and husband Heath Frost; 15 great-grandchildren; stepgrandchildren Verlin Ramsey Jr. wife Crystal and Shawna and husband Nick Stutzman; six stepgrandchildren; brothers Gerry Gaby and Kenny and wife Judy Gaby; sister-in-law Bonnie Overlander; several nieces and nephews; and dog Molly.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, grandchildren Amanda Ramsey and Daniel Hite, five great-grandchildren, brother David Gaby, and dog Teat.
The funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2024, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, Indiana with Pastor David Eaton officiating.
The interment will take place following the service in the Akron Cemetery, Akron.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron. A fireman's service will be at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Henry Township Volunteer Fire Department.
