Bruce Steven Thomas Dovel, 73, of
Elkton, VA passed away on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation and Nursing, in Harrisonburg.
Mr. Dovel was born on November 22, 1951 in Dayton, VA, and was the son of the late Robert Austin Dovel and Vera Margaret Woodworth Dovel.
He attended Turner Ashby High School and graduated in 1969 and was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He was an avid Nascar fan and his favorite drivers were Mark Martin and Jimmy Johnson. His love for racing was not only as a fan, but a driver of Pontiacs and Chevys as well. He drove the #27 car at Eastside Speedway and Natural Bridge Speedway for many years. Bruce was the owner of B & D Body Works. His greatest times were spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a kind and loving man who believed in God with all his heart. Bruce was also known for including the words "In God We Trust" at every opportunity that presented itself.
Surviving family members include five daughters, Christal Gibson and husband, Monty, Sheri Cave and husband, Timmy, Brandy Wood and husband, Nicholas, Danielle Dovel, and Heather Harris; brothers, Harry Austin Dovel and David Paul Dovel; sister, Coraene Edna Simmons; six grandchildren, Haley Dovel, Charity Duke, Hunter Fitzwater, Carter Fitzwater, Kayla, and Brittany; eight great-grandchildren, Mia Christine, Xander Cole, Noah, Connor, Langstyn, C.J., Aubrey, and Ryder; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and beloved dog, Sarg.
In addition to his parents, Bruce was preceded in death by sisters, Miriam Dovel and Marita Wadford; half-sister, Elizabeth Knight; nephew, Mike Wadford and beloved pets, Snoopy, Mr. Lou and Lucy Lee.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Reverend Larry Aikens and Shannon Beasley officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the funeral home.
