Beverly Cooper Obituary

NASHVILLE - Beverly Batchelor Cooper died on November 30, 2013 at the age of 84 in her home in Nashville, NC surrounded by her family. Born to Ethel Thorne and Willard Pell Batchelor on November 4, 1929 in Nashville, NC, Beverly graduated cum laude from Meredith College with a Bachelor's Degree in Religion. She later attained her Master's in Education and French from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Beverly and her beloved husband, Roy, were childhood sweethearts and wed in September of 1952. She and Roy lived in Nashville for the rest of their lives.
Beverly was a renowned public school teacher having taught French and English in middle school and high school for the Nash County School System. Many of her students who have grown up to live successful lives attribute their start to Beverly's inspirational teaching. In her role as a teacher, Beverly worked nights, days and weekends preparing lesson plans that would help inspire and shape young minds. She believed in the power of education.
After her teaching career, Beverly earned a Paralegal Degree and came back to help with the law office of her husband, her two sons, Roy and Pell and their law partners. She helped the office run smoothly with her accounting, paralegal and people skills.
Beverly enjoyed her work with Delta Kappa Gamma, the Honorary Teachers Society and the Nashville Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School Superintendent and choir member. She loved her book club, her birthday club, reading, theater, music and dance.
Beverly was a woman of deep faith who contemplated going into the ministry. However, she decided that public school teaching and raising her family were her callings. By the grace of God, she fought cancer courageously at different times over the years. She was grateful for her full, joyful life.
Beverly leaves behind her husband, Roy A. Cooper, Jr., son, Roy A. Cooper, III and wife, Kristin, son Pell C. Cooper and wife Meredith and four grandchildren, Hilary, Natalie, Claire, and Marelle. Beverly also leaves many dear friends and extended family.
Visitation for family and friends will occur 6:00pm to 8:00pm Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A service to remember Beverly will be held at 11:00am Wednesday morning at Nashville Baptist Church with Rev. Alfred Ayscue officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Nashville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 637, Nashville NC 27856 or the Boys and Girls Club of Nash/Edgecombe Counties, P.O. Box 1622, Rocky Mount NC 27802.
Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount NC. You may share your memories and send the family condolences online by visiting www.wheelerwoodlief.com.

Mrs. Cooper was one of my favorite teachers. One subject I remember was literature, reading, writing. But she was my Cub Scout leader, den mother and that was a great start to years of Scouting. Her home was always open to the guys in our neighborhood. I remember trips out to the family farm.

One of the most cherished memories of my life is the trip to France that Mrs. Cooper chaperoned for a group of her French students from Northern Nash. Althought attentive to us as her charges, she also let us have the freedom to explore and learn on our own in the country she so loved. I hold dear the memories of that trip, and all that Madame Cooper taught me. The love of all things Francais that she instilled in me will live forever, as she and that wonderful time of my life will in my memory. Je t'aime Madame! To her family, thank you for sharing her with us.

Madame Cooper has been on my mind frequently lately. This summer I started to take an adult French class and I find words and pronunciations of sounds that I haven't used since the mid 80's flying unknowingly from my lips. I always knew she was a gem in the world of teachers, but now I have personal proof how her lessons sank into our minds without us even knowing. Her class was an experience in love of a language and a culture that we lived through her. Heaven has a very special angel in their midst!!

Mrs. Cooper went along with my tiny little girl notion that her pony, Pepper, was MY pony in 1970-something. She was so sweet and caring. Later I had the joy of being in her 7th and 8th grade reading and language arts block. She inspired me to great things, as I, too, have become a mother and career teacher. She will be missed, but our loss is Heaven's gain!

I loved Beverly Cooper from the day I wandered into her French class at Northern Nash - late because I had gotten lost.

She welcomed me at that moment and encouraged me not to be embarassed. Throughout my years in her classes, I was always welcome and never embarassed. She was the BEST!!

I have thought her her often through the years, and I'm sad that she is gone from us. Yet I know she is in the company of the Savior. Singing ... in French ... with the angels.

Much love to you all ...

I have so many fond memories of Beverly. I've been reflecting on the times at the farm, the many sleepovers with Pell and friends and how indulgent she was when 'The Nashville 5' practiced (loudly) at her house. She was always inspiring, encouraging and forgiving and my life is richer having had her in it.

Our sincere condolences to the Roy Cooper family. Remember Mrs. Cooper being such a great part of the Nash County School system and being such a professional. Such a sweet Lady. Coop and Pell being perfect sons in such a wonderful family. Nashville has lost a terrific lady but will never be forgotten by many of us who knew and worked with Beverly. Prayers to Roy and family during this sad time.
