Hubert Stone Obituary

Hubert Stone LUMBERTON- Hubert Stone, age 78, of 1004 Havelock Place, died on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008 at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton, N.C. Graveside Service will be held on today at 11 a.m. in Rowland Cemetery, Rowland, N.C. with the Rev. David B. McGugan, officiating. He was preceded in death by his father and mother: Albert Haynes and Brenda Hall Stone; two brothers: Albert Lindsey Stone and Billy Johnson Stone; one sister: Margaret Stone Moody. Being raised in the McDonald area of Robeson County, Mr. Stone attended Rowland Public Schools. He entered the US Army in 1949 and served for three years, two months and fifteen days. While in the Army, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was an active member of McDonald Baptist Church. Mr. Stone married Norma McCullers of Red Springs in 1953. They remained married until her death in 1974. During their marriage they had three children: Sharon Stone McGirt of Charlotte, N.C., Donald Kevin Stone of Winchester, West Virginia and J. Keith Stone of Rocky Mount, N.C. In 1984 he married Eloise Day of Lumberton, N.C. They remained married until his death. In addition to being survived by his wife and children, he is also survived by one sister: Jean Stone Bailey of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers: Howard Badger Stone of Laurinburg, N.C. and Billy Johnson Stone of Rowland, N.C.; four step children; 5 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews also survive him. Mr. Stone entered law enforcement with Rowland Police Department in 1953. He was Chief of Police in Fair Bluff, N.C. from 1954 until 1957. From there he served as a Deputy Sheriff from 1957 until 1978. In 1978 he was elected as the Sheriff of Robeson County. He served that post until his retirement in 1994. Memorials can be made to Southeastern Hospice House, 1100 Pine Run Drive, Lumberton, N.C. 28358. Boles Funeral Home of Rowland is serving the family.
