John Letchworth Obituary

John Madre Letchworth, 91, passed away on May 6, 2013. He was born January 26, 1922 in Greene County, to the late Clarence C. and Lucy Wooten Letchworth. John had been a resident of the West Mount community since 1939. He was predeceased by his wife, Susan Pridgen Letchworth, in 2001.
He is survived by a brother, F. C. Letchworth, of Rocky Mount; sisters, Lena Leake, of Hampstead, Dorothy Strader, of Reidsville, Alma Somers, of Reidsville, Lula Strader, of Topsail Beach, and Ethel Skinner, of Yorktown, VA; sons, J. Wayne Letchworth, of Rocky Mount, and C. Jerry Letchworth and wife, Suzanne, of Cary; grandchildren, Sharon L. Tolle and husband, Jeff, of Kernersville, Scott Letchworth and wife, Anna, of Raleigh, and Elizabeth L. D'Alonzo and husband, Nick, of Cary; great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Katherine Tolle, and Sarah and Grace Letchworth.
John was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star for service with the 802nd Field Artillery Division during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a charter member of each of the following: West Mount Ruritan Club, West Mount Fire Department, and Nash County Fire and Rescue Association. A home builder in Nash County for four decades, he served as a member of the Nash County Planning Board for ten years, and was an active member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder Emeritus.
Visitation will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Cornerstone Funeral Home in Nashville, followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
