Alexander W. Sheen, 90, of Rome and South Pasadena, FL, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025 to join his beloved wife, Nuala Scanlan Sheen, in heaven.
Born March 9, 1934, in New York City to William and Mary Sheen. He was a graduate of New York Institute of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Science. He was united in marriage to Nuala
C. Sheen, on November 15, 1958. Together they shared a blessed union of over 60 years.
Al had many jobs over the years as he was extremely industrious. He enlisted in the Marine Corp at 18 years of age and continued serving his country in the Air Force Reserves for 40+ years, retiring at the highest enlisted rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was a New York City police officer and then a New York City fireman. Upon retiring from the FDNY, he worked for the Department of Defense on Griffiss Air Force Base for 20 years.
Until recently, Al split his time each year between
Rome, NY and S. Pasadena, FL. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Lee Center and a member of St. John Vianney Church in St. Petersburg, FL. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
Al and Nuala had many friends in both New York and Florida. He cherished his time at the Lake Delta Yacht Club especially. They were prolific travelers and loved learning about new cultures and sharing their experiences. Al's stories were sought after and entertaining.
Al was the epitome of a family man. He gave his love, time and advice to his children and grandchildren. He was extremely proud of their accomplishments and was known to brag. His generosity is legendary. He will be missed tremendously.
He is survived by his son, Kevin Sheen of Hernando, FL, and his three daughters, Catherine Wheeler of St. Petersburg, FL, Mary Bridget Wesche of Syracuse, NY and Nuala (Tim) Woods of Westernville, NY. Al is also survived by seven grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Mariana and Thomas Smith, Madeline Leahy, and Freya, Nuala, Finn, and Aiden Woods. He is also survived by his great grandson, Zander Smith. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Nuala, his brother, William Sheen Jr., his sister, Dorothy Calverly, his daughter in law, Penny Sheen, and his sons in law, John Wesche and Donald Wheeler.
As the patriarch of the clan, Al enjoyed close relationships with his nephews and nieces, as well as a network of cousins from both Nuala's and his family.
Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, at 418 N. George St, Rome NY on Thursday, March 20, 2025 from 2- 3:30pm. A memorial with Father Kelly will take place at 3:30pm at the funeral home for any who would like to attend. Interment will take place at a later date with family.
