CROGHAN – Alvin J. Roggie, 88, formerly of Steeple View Courts, passed away Friday afternoon, August 9, 2024 at Carthage Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing.
Alvin was born on September 6, 1935 in Lowville, NY, a son of the late Samuel C. and Bertha Yousey Roggie. He attended Lowville Academy and had polio and had to leave school. After his recovery, he worked on the family farm. On June 30, 1954, he married Alice M. Roes at Dadville Mennonite Church with Rev. Lloyd Boshart officiating. The couple lived in Brattleboro, VT, while Alvin was in 1W Service at Brattleboro Retreat for four years. Upon returning to the area, they settled in Carthage, and later purchased a farm in Boonville. He later owned and operated Roggies Custom Spraying. In 1985, they moved to Lowville, where the couple owned and operated Country Motors on Route 26 until 2014 when they retired.
Alvin was a member of Carthage Mennonite Church, where he enjoyed being a Youth Leader.
He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, singing and playing his harmonica. Alvin had a heart for people, especially youth, and enjoyed helping many along the way.
He is survived by his eight children and their spouses: Earl and Lucy Roggie of Castorland, Charlene and Lonnie Widrick of Lowville, Stephen and Cindy Roggie of Colorado Springs, CO, Patricia and Lyndon Moser of Lowville, Michael Roggie of Clarksville, TN, Valerie and Dennis Moser of Castorland, Brenda and Robert Schrag of Farmington, NM, and Donna and Dean Moser of Copenhagen; 27 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Delores Roggie of Lowville, Edward and Betty Roggie of Lowville, and Andrew and Eunice Roggie of Lowville; a sister, Martha Nortz of Lowville; a sister-in-law, Ruthann Roggie of Lowville; a brother-in-law, Alvin Steria Jr. of Croghan; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his beloved wife Alice; a granddaughter, Marrianne Marie Roggie; a daughter-in-law, Debby Roggie; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Daniel C. Roggie, Ralph and Frieda Roggie; a sister, Doris Steria; and a brother-in-law, James Nortz.
Calling hours were from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at Croghan Mennonite Church. A graveside service was held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, August 12, 2024 at Croghan Mennonite Cemetery. A Memorial Service followed at 10:30 a.m. at Croghan Mennonite Church.
