Barbara Swiss Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara Swiss, 88, of Westerville, on October 12, 2023, at Rome Health.

Born in Rome, NY, in 1935 to Albert and Marion Herriman, Barbara attended Remsen Central School and SUNY Oswego, earning her bachelor's degree in teaching. She married Stanley W. Swiss on June 24 1956, in Anchorage, Alaska.

Barbara devoted 28 years to teaching in the Rome City School District, but her most cherished role was being a mother to her five children. She found joy in travel, especially to Alaska and Sanibel Island, and cherished moments at the family camp in Beaver River. Barbara was a skilled artist and quilter, sharing these passions with her friends.

She is survived by her son Kevin Swiss and Regina Rich of Rome, NY, daughters, Virginia (Russell) Thompson of Beaver River, NY, Valerie Swiss and Richard Lee of Macedon, NY, Kimberly (Todd) VanDresar of Westernville, NY, and daughter-in-law Sue Swiss of Rome, NY. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Clinton, Chelsea, Tyler, Dustin, Joshua, Hannah, and Madison and her great grandchildren: Piper, Annalise, Jack and Charlotte. Barbara was predeceased by her husband Stanley, son Gregory Swiss, brother Jack Herriman, and sister Vivian Jenkins.

As per Barbara's wishes, a private service took place on October 16, 2023, at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Boonville, NY.

The family is deeply grateful to the caring and compassionate staff at Rome Health for their dedicated support.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Barry Funeral Home, 807. W. Chestnut Street.

Mrs. Swiss was my kindergarten teacher (and third grade teacher as well when she switched grade levels) at Ridge Mills School in the early 1970s. I remember her as a kind and smiling person and wonderful teacher, one who helped me to absolutely love my time in elementary school. My best friend was also in kindergarten with me and she felt similarly. We both have specific and detailed memories of class, which is meaningful and not easy to come by when thinking back to our five-year-old selves.

What a beautiful legacy to leave, having touched so many lives in such a positive way. Wishing comfort and peace to her family. Godspeed and thank you Mrs. Swiss.
