Bernard Dzwonkas Obituary

Bernard J. Dzwonkas, 98, passed away, peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of his family, on January 31, 2025.

He was born and raised in Westmoreland, on August 30, 1926, a son of the late Anthony and Antoinette (Grigas) Dzwonkas. He was united in marriage to Mary Kathleen Mulcahey on June 26, 1954, in Oswego. Bernie and Kay recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, prior to her passing on October 20, 2024. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation. Bernie made time to serve his community as the Assessor for the Town of Westmoreland and was a Town Councilman for many years.

Bernie's love of baseball was second only to his love for his family. He was a lifelong baseball player and fanatic - playing, coaching and serving as an umpire for many years. His proudest achievement was earning a tryout with the Philadelphia Phillies.

He loved to hunt deer and pheasant. He enjoyed fishing, often piling his kids, nieces and nephews in the station wagon to go to Hecla Pond. Bernie lovingly tended to his gardens, raising his famous horseradish that was sought after by all. Bernie also loved a good game of cards at family gatherings.

Bernie will be missed by his four daughters, a son and their spouses, Suzanne and Patrick Helbach, of PA, Bonnie and Mark Pawlick, of Marcy, BJ and Michele Dzwonkas, of Clinton, Wendy Ellis, of Marcy and Donna Dzwonkas, of Seattle, WA; seven beloved grandchildren; ten cherished great-grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Carolyn Dzwonkas; sister, Bernice Logan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; siblings, Walter Diamond, Anthony Dzwonkas, Antoinette Beauchemin, Della Marcaitis, Albina Dzwonkas, Jen Larner and Agnes Cochis; and son-in-law, Joe Ellis.

All are invited to call on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, 35 College St., Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday from the Church of the Annunciation in Clark Mills. He will be laid to rest in Westmoreland Cemetery in the spring.

The family thanks his caregivers, Denise Fauteux, and the many others who allowed Bernie and Kay to be able to remain at home. The family would also like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care for their help and assistance.
