Doris May Merchant

The journey is over. Doris May Merchant, of Rome, passed away on August 28, 2025, at the age of 100.

She was born on May 6, 1925, in North Wales, England, to the late Margaret and Levi Roberts.

Doris and Herbert Frances Merchant married in 1948, a union that lasted until his passing in 2001. Doris and Bert made the decision to leave their homeland and make a new life in the United States. In 1957, Doris flew to Cornwall, Canada, with their four young sons, to join Bert, who had been there for a year, getting a job and place to live with the hopes of getting into the US. Moving to Massena, NY and eventually to Rome, in 1966, their dreams came true. In 1967, they (and their whole family) became naturalized citizens of the United States. After raising their family on Kossuth Street and. upon retirement, they moved to Winter Garden, FL and had many good years of warmth.

Doris leaves four sons, Martin (Mary), of Sparta, NC, Richard (Carol), of Barcelona, Spain, Stephen, of Syracuse and Kevin (MaryEllen), of Kernersville, NC. She also leaves her grandchildren, Andrew, Abigail, Anna, Wyn, Colleen, Megan, Elysia and Meredith; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brother, Erwin; and grandchildren, Sean and John.

The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Bethany Gardens for taking care of Doris as she passed through the most difficult time in her life.
