Karen Coleman Obituary

Karen Kathleen Coleman, 83, passed away, January 17th, peacefully with her family by her side. Karen was born on December 27, 1941, to Mary Duell and Robert Kent of Rome, New York. Karen attended Rome Free Academy, graduating in 1959. After graduation, she was employed as a secretary for Arthur Law Firm in Rome. On October 22, 1960, she united in marriage to Allen Arthur Coleman, their marriage endured for 51 years until his passing on January 25, 2012. They bought a small farm on Bartlett Road and resided there until their passing. Karen spent most of her years at home selflessly raising their six children. The children fondly remember all the home cooked meals, cookies and baked goods growing up. Especially, the Saturday pizza nights when Karen would make homemade dough in the morning and turn that into six pizzas that night. Karen was an avid reader. Her family believes that she has read every book at Jervis Library as for decades that was a regular Wednesday stop, first for Karen and her mother, Mary, and later with her grandchildren, Hannah and Milly. Karen loved watching Jeopardy and would amaze anyone watching with her as she would know the answers to almost all the categories. Karen was also known for completing the NY Times daily crossword puzzle. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch, talking and spending time with her sixth son, Randy Froschauer. Later in life, when she no longer drove, she enjoyed taking rides on Wednesday with Laurie and their Wal-Mart stops and on the weekends with Brian, whom she said would tell her the most interesting trivia and history stories. When she returned home she would often recount her adventures with Steven.

Karen is survived by her children, Steven, Scott, Mark(Chrissy Nuccio, Clinton NY), Brian, Eric and Laurie and Rick Szmurlo, all of Rome, grandchildren, Mark Coleman Jr., Tenn. Marisa(Kevin)Chapman, Ga, Hannah and Milly Szmurlo of Rome, great grandchildren, Julia, Leah and Callan Chapman, Ga, sisters-in-laws, Karen Kent, Lee Center, Marilyn O'Connor, Rome, Carol Rall, Fl., Brenda(Skip)Becker, Palatine Bridge, special great aunt, June Aiken, Rome and several nieces and nephews.

Karen is predeceased by her husband, Allen, grandson, Will Coleman, sister, Eleanor (Dennis)Bryan, brother, Robert Kent and brothers-in-laws, Norman, Ronald and Vernon Coleman.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr's. Wassell and Kashtanova. Dr. Anwar Wassell took extraordinary care of Karen as an outpatient in Rome and during her stay at Wynn Hospital. Dr. Yekaterina Kashtanova provided her expert care and counsel to Karen and family while at Wynn Hospital and to the amazing nursing staff in the ED, ICU 3 East and 5 West wings who showed tremendous care and compassion to Karen and the family during her 3 weeks at Wynn Hospital.

Per Karen's request there will be no calling hours. There will be a mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter's Church, Rome on Thursday, January 23 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in spring at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rome, NY.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome NY 13440.

I´m so very sorry for your loss and my deepest condolences. She was a proud and loving mother and grandmother. Her loved shined through all her delicious meals she made and pies she loved to bake.
My love too you all!

Eric and family, I only met your mom a couple of times throughout the years, but you could tell she truly loved your family.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord,
and let Your perpetual light shine upon her.
May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed
rest in peace.

Amen.

I'd just like to add those trips did give our mother a great deal of pleasure and happiness. She'd get up and be ready to go hours before it was time to leave.
