Marion Poppleton Obituary

Marion L. Poppleton, 103, of Verona, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2025, at the Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center, where she had been a rehab patient since March 26, 2025.

She was born on January 20, 1922, in Rome, the daughter of Christopher and Rena (Smith) Miller. She was educated in Rome schools and went on to receive her GED.

On July 7, 1944, Marion was united in marriage to Richard James Poppleton in Baltimore, Maryland. Richard passed away on August 7, 1973.

Marion was employed by the Verona Elementary School and later the Rome Developmental Center before her retirement.

In 2023, Marion was presented with a Senate resolution from Senator Joe Griffo celebrating her 101st birthday.

After Marion's 100th birthday, the New London Volunteer Fire Department has celebrated her birthday with a fire procession drive-by yearly since 2022.

Marion loved crocheting and made many christening gowns, Afghans, 100s of dish cloths, and pan scrubbies for family and friends. She enjoyed watching NASCAR races on Sundays and was an avid fan of Syracuse Orange basketball (much to the dismay of her granddaughter). She enjoyed walking, baking molasses cookies and kuchen, and vacuuming on early Saturday mornings.

Surviving are her three children, Richard Poppleton Jr., of Verona, Suzanne Walker, of Verona and Pensacola, FL and James (Kay) Poppleton, of Blossvale; three grandchildren, Steven Poppleton, of Verona, Jeffrey (Sheila) Poppleton, of Verona, and Joanne (Michael) LaLonde, of Rome; nine great-grandchildren, Bradley, Andrew, Logan, Owen, Adam, and Kole Poppleton, Victoria, Everly, and Lincoln LaLonde; three great great-grandchildren, Bentley, Oakley, and Paisley Poppleton; and several nieces and nephews. Marion was predeceased by an infant granddaughter, Mary Ann Rose Poppleton on January 5, 1980; a great-granddaughter, Amelia Rose Poppleton on July 22, 2011; a son-in-law, Robert E. Walker on January 25, 2014; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Poppleton on September 5, 2019; an uncle, Ralph Smith; and three brothers, William Miller, Robert Miller, and Ronald Miller.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Crown Hill Memorial Park, Clinton. There are no public calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made in Marion's memory to the New London Volunteer Fire Department, 7063 Cornell St., Rome, NY, 13440. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., 342 Main St., Oneida. You may view her obituary and send her family a message of sympathy at www.ironsidefuneralhome.com.
