Paul Heiland Obituary
He was born in 1927, in Utica, NY, a son of Edward C. and Helen O. Hart Heiland. Paul attended Utica Free Academy, and graduated from Utica College of Syracuse University in 1949. He was a US Navy veteran, having served from 1945-1951. He married Jane Szymanski in 1954, in Buffalo, NY. Mr. Heiland, along with his brother Edward, owned and operated Utica Mack, Inc. After his retirement, he became an ombudsman for the Red Cross, and served as Heritage Home board president.
Mr. Heiland was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Sunrise Rotary, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, The American Red Cross, Utica Harley Owners Group, and many other community and volunteer organizations. Paul enjoyed piloting his Cessna, camping, and riding his Harley Davidson. Throughout his life, his family was his most important source of enjoyment and love.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; eight children and their spouses, Martha Gualano, Judy (David) Klievoneit, Carolyn (Richard) Wright, Joan (Timothy) Kane, Paul (Regina), Thomas (Renee), Michael, and Mark (Lisa) Heiland; 22 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Edward; sisters, Frances and Mary Jeanne; son-in-law, Paul Gualano; and daughter-in-law, Cecilia Heiland.
The family would like to express their thanks to Deb Burke for her continued love and support.
Funeral services will be Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary of Mount Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church, 648 Jay St., Utica, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Thomas Servatius. The family will receive callers immediately following the Mass. Interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to St. Jude's Children's Research Foundation.
