BARBARA E. NELSON, 85 ROCKFORD - Barbara E. Nelson, 85, of Rockford, died at 12:04 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013, in Rockford Memorial Hospital. Born May 26, 1928, in Rockford, the daughter of Ray Van and Ethel (Anderson) DeVenter. Graduate of East High School, class of 1945, and Carthage College with a Bachelor's degree. She married Nat S. Nelson Dec. 26, 1949, in Rockford. Barb was a Rockford public school teacher for over 26 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where she participated in the choir and the worship committee. She is survived by her husband, Nat; children, Van, Gregg, and Nancy; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Predeceased by her son, Nat B. Nelson in 2000. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 4700 Augustana Dr., with Rev. Kenneth R. Storck officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery.
