Bernard Johnson Obituary
Bernard Elwood Johnson, 88, of Rockford, passed away on April 18, 2018. He was born on December 16, 1929 in Rockford, the son of Harry A. and Dora M. (Brinkman) Johnson. Bernard graduated from East High School in 1947. He was a graduate of NIU with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. He married Janet K. Eggert on October 17, 1959 in Rockford. Bernard served in the United States Navy from 1947 to 1952. He retired from the Illinois Dept. of Veteran Affairs as a Veterans' Service Officer. He was past National Commander of Navy Club Ship #1, past President of the Harmony Singing Society and life member of SMSF, American Legion, VFW, Navy Club, Harmony Club, and 3L Clubs. Bernard was also a Combined Veteran Affairs (CVA) Supervisor. He enjoyed golfing and going to Laughlin, NV. He loved the New York Yankees and Chicago Bears. Survivors include his children, Stephen (Dawn), Jay and Denise Johnson; grandchildren, Samantha (Weston) Stroud, Krystal (Matt), Ian and Aaron Johnson, and Kayla Lamb; great-grandchildren, Kaylynn Langston, Myleigh and Jase Stroud, Harleigh Rush, and Amelia Johnson; sisters, Ila Price, and Wilma Miller; and sister-in-law, Mary Eggert. Predeceased by parents; wife, Janet; son, Scott; and siblings, Donald Johnson, Beulah Graham, Ruth Hamilton, and Harry Johnson Jr.
Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 in Fred C. Olson Chapel, Olson Funeral Services, & Cremation, Ltd, 1002 2nd Ave., Rockford, with Pastor Dan Herman officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, April 23 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at Fred C. Olson Chapel and on April 24 from 12:00 to 12:45 pm prior to the service.
