Carl M. Holm 1927—2017
Carl M. Holm, 89, of Rockford, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017, in his home. He was born November 16, 1927, in Mobile, Alabama; the son of Martin and Lillie (Johnson) Holm. They moved to Rockford when he was 1 year old and he lived the rest of his life here. He was part of the second graduating class of East High School. He married Viola V. Phillips on August 29, 1953, in Rockford; she predeceased him February 28, 2015. Carl served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He attended Bethesda Covenant Church. He and Viola owned the Maid-Rite on West State and Johnston. Later he was a Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputy, where he worked as security in the court house. Carl was a member of Northern IL Studebaker Club, where he was the secretary. He enjoyed fishing, reading, especially science fiction books and his family trips. He is survived by his sons, Victor (Vicki) Phillips of Poplar Bluff, MO, and Bruce (Patti) Holm of Loves Park; seven grandchildren, Ricardo, Paul and Felicia Phillips, Natalie (Shawn) Amdal, Neil (Pam Holt) Holm and Carley (Christopher) McMahon; and numerous great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his son, Thomas Holm; granddaughter, Kimberly Phillips; and sisters, Shirley Sowl and Lorraine Holm. Special thanks to Transitions Hospice and the Visiting Angels Caregivers for their wonderful work and the care they gave to Carl.
Memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2017, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., Rockford, with visitation from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the chapel. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 4312 E.
