Carlos was my track coach 1961-1963 he was someone I looked up to and respected. Many times after track practice he dropped me off at Keystone and 38th street where I caught the 2B Central Bus to ride home close to Emerson Street. We had many good conversations On the way home.James A Shepherd ([email protected])

My name is Charles Johnson and I was one of Coach Bell's Red Raiders. Coach Bell was the first one to call me Charlie and that is the name that most people came to know me at Tech and later on at Columbia University in New York and as an International Rugby player in New York. My senior year Coach Bell would pick me up at 38th and Keystone and give a ride to school. I lived in the 3700 block of Caroline so it was on his way to school. We would talk about track but mostly about football and my future. While football would be a part of my future it was not going to be my future. He truly taught me to be a winner on the field and in life. I turned down DePauw to go to Columbia. Had I known he was probably the reason DePauw was interested in me I probably would have gone. He never mentioned it so I went to New York. The life lessons I learned from Coach Bell led me to get both a BA and MBA from Columbia University. As a mentor and a coach he was the best I ever had. I will him and his family in my prayers. Love you Coach.

I have many fond memories of Mr. Bell from my childhood! He lived next door and I would see him when going to play with Kim. He was always so kind and would give a fabulous bear hug greeting. The world was a better place with Carlos Bell! - Janet Hartman Hankins
