Irene Susanna Loy 1925—2018
Irene Susanna Loy, 92, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2018. She was 92 years old. Irene was born June 29, 1925, in Rockford, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph and Zuzanna (Zasada) Kowalewski. She graduated from Rockford East High School in 1942. Employed at Sundstrand Machine Tool as a stenographer during WWII. United in marriage to Robert A. Loy in a Naval Chapel in Panama Canal Zone on September 23, 1946. Lived on Far Fan Naval Base in Panama Canal Zone, then in Norfolk, VA; Bainbridge, MD; Imperial Beach, CA; and upon husband's retirement from the Navy returned to Rockford in 1963. Employed at Eleventh Street Auto Supply as a bookkeeper until moving to Singapore where her husband was transferred by Sundstrand in 1976, and lived there until husband's retirement in 1989. Former member of Alpine Lutheran Church and the church choir. Past member of Classic Chorale. Former officer of North Suburban Womens' Club, volunteered in the Babes Program of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Volunteers in Government of Rockford (VIGOR). Past member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Navy Wives Club, and Sweet Adelines. Irene moved to Clive, Iowa in 2010, where she lived with her daughter, Nancy and son-in-law, John Wood until her death. Predeceased by husband, Robert; parents; sisters, Pearl Janoski, Sophia Eicksteadt; brothers, Casey Kowalewski, Josh Kowalewski, and Eugene (Hogan) Kowalewski. Survivors include brother, Zygmund (Patricia) Kowalewski in Anchorage AK; daughter, Nancy (John) Wood in Clive, IA; four sons, Professor David (Linda Goodhew) Loy, Niwot, CO, Gregory (June) Loy, Palo Alto, CA, Richard (Carol) Loy, Estes Park, CO, and retired U.S Air Force Major Kevin (Tamra), Brookfield, WI; five granddaughters, Carolyn (Brad) Manard, Tahra Loy (Andrew Grimm), Amanda (Jason) Lewis, Jessica (Jon) Agnich and Chelsea (Brian) Larsen; nine grandsons, Benjamin (Mary) Loy, Robert (Alexis) Wood, Brett Loy, Seth Loy, Noah Loy, Aaron (Hannah) Loy, Bryant (Jessalyn) Loy, Lucas Loy, and Mark Loy Goodhew; fifteen great-grandsons, Jonathan Clark, Benjamin Clark, Aidan Loy-Grimm, Kyle Lewis, Jameson Loy-Grimm, Korbin Lewis, Gavin Wood, Drake Wood, Bryson Loy, twins Lincoln and Jackson Larsen, Bennett Loy, Joshua Loy, Quinn Larsen, and Elliot Agnich; six great-granddaughters, Kendra Lewis, Evelyn Loy-Grimm, Scarlett Larsen, Natalie Wood, Elizabeth Agnich, and Sapphira Loy; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2018, at Alpine Lutheran Church, 5001 Forest View Ave., Rockford. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service in the church.
