Janet McGinn Obituary

JANET (HOGAN) MCGINN OREGON - Janet (Hogan) McGinn passed away peacefully Thursday, April 12, 2012, after a long and full life. Janet was born April 24, 1925, to Daniel and Amelia (Funk) Hogan and spent her childhood in Rockford. During World War II, she met Commander Martin James McGinn and married him on June 8, 1946, in St. Louis, where they spent the early years of their marriage. They moved to Chicago and later to Oregon to rear their eight children. Throughout her marriage, Janet worked with her husband in all his business pursuits. After her children graduated from college, she launched a very successful real estate career as a broker. She continued to work in that capacity until 2010. As a community volunteer, she worked tirelessly for her church, the elderly and the needy. Throughout her life, Janet enjoyed traveling with her family around the world, rarely missing an opportunity to visit a new destination. Few of us can excel at all the roles in life we are called upon to fulfill. As a wife, a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Janet was her family's role model in each and every way. Janet was a source of limitless wisdom and kindness to all she met. She was selfless, generous and devoted to her family and friends. Janet's companionship, cheerfulness, and love of life will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. For 57 years, Janet was the beloved wife of Martin James McGinn who preceded her in death, along with daughter, Ann (James) Hermes in 1997. She was the loving mother of Mary (Bernard Shapiro) McGinn, Catherine (James) Kinsella, Maureen (Lawrence) Vaughan, Julie (James) Allen, Daniel James McGinn, Sheila (Keith) Dorman and Martha Regina McGinn. She was the devoted grandmother of Sara, Colleen, Molly and Daniel McGinn-Shapiro, Katie, Meg and Erin Kinsella, Meghan, Brendan and Kiera Vaughan, Mary, Rachel, Martin, Stephen, Frannie and Michael Hermes, Melissa, Robb, Patrick, Brian and Kathleen Allen, and Catherine Dorman; and great- grandmother of 14, all of whom were a source of immense pride and happiness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 301 N. Fourth St., Oregon. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. Seventh St., Oregon, with a rosary recited at 6:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, Chicago. To all the McGinn Family, Jim and I had great admiration for your mom. She was always so kind and understanding as she helped me after Jim died and was such support as she sold our home in the Mongan Division. If any of you are in the Chicago area, please call sometime. Would so enjoyed seeing you and recalling fun times when some of you were in H.S. and Jim helped with the youth group. Love and prayers, Katie Kunzer,
