JOAN A. VAN GILDER, 74 MADISON, Wis. - Joan A. Van Gilder, 74, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, with her loving daughter, Laura, by her side. Born Jan. 4, 1938, in Janesville, the daughter of Robert and Agnes (DeFreitas) Lorenz; she was raised in Rockford, Ill. Joan enjoyed spending time with her family, doing the daily newspaper crossword, reading and trying new recipes. Survived by daughters, Laura (Jesus) Ayala and Diane VanGilder-Armstrong (Larry Armstrong); her grandchildren, including Adam (Claire) Schowalter; great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara (Bob) Borden, Delores (Gary) Vasey and Darlene (Bill) Kinder; and many other family and friends. Predeceased by parents, Robert and Agnes Lorenz; brothers, Robert (Betty) Lorenz and Ronald (Sharon) Lorenz; and grandson, Ryan Schowalter, whom she adored.
