KENNETH D. MILLER, 84
ROCKFORD - Kenneth D. Miller, 84, of Rockford died at 1:23 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, in Swedish-American Hospital. Born March 4, 1925, in Rockford, the son of Adelbert and Edith (Hamil-ton) Miller. He was a graduate of Rockford East High School, class of 1943. He attended Georgia Tech and received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from IIT in 1948. He served in the Na-val Air Corps and Naval Reserves as Lt. (JG) until his honorable dis-charge in 1959. He married Ina Gustafson Oct. 19, 1946, in Zion Lutheran Church. After graduating, he worked for the Cook County Highway De-partment. In 1948, he became as-sistant superintendent for the Winnebago County Highway De-partment and was responsible for the design and construction of ma-jor projects including Spring Creek, Alpine, Mulford, Harrison and Sandy Hollow roadways. In 1965, he began work for the Sani-tary District of Rockford, where he became director of engineer-ing, responsible for all phases of engineering administration, in-cluding construction and design. He was responsible for obtaining grants for projects such as the $60 million expansion of the Sanitary District that involved more than 60 contracts. In 1984, he began work for Greeley and Hanson as the project engineer for the Elgin treatment plant expansion, retir-ing in 1987. He was a registered professional engineer, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Chi Epsilon Civil En-gineering Honor Society, and the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers, where he served as president of the Rockford chapter. He was a member of Zion Lu-theran Church, where he served as vice president of the church council, where he also ushered. He had a lifelong passion for the game of golf, and he and Ina en-joyed dancing. He excelled at all types of construction and remod-eling projects, and designed and constructed numerous houses in the Rockford area. He is survived by his wife, Ina; son, Craig (Joyce) Miller; daughters, Lucinda (Roger) Fredrickson and Sally Miller (Mary Weathersby); grandchildren, Scott, Jeff, and Mike Miller, Lauren Stromberg, Steve (Kristin) Fredrickson, Matt and Mitch Myers, and Rachael Crigler; great-granddaughter, Kathryn Fredrickson; brother, Gale R. (Nancy) Miller; and two more great-grandchildren on the way.Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, in Fred C. Olson Funeral and Cremation Services, 1001 Second Ave., with visitation from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., with the Rev. Loren Nielson officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery.
