Matthew Wittwer Obituary

MATTHEW EDWIN WITTWER, 18 MONROE CENTER - Matthew Edwin Wittwer, 18, of Monroe Center died in the early morning Sunday, May 16, 2010, on the four-year anniversary of his Grammy Hazel's death, in his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a year and a half battle with leukemia. Born July 7, 1991, in Rockford, the son of Mark and Marcia (Doig) Wittwer. Matt graduated from Hiawatha High School. He will be remembered as an amazing young man who was a hard worker with a strong spirit who courageously fought his illness, and was a hero to us all. Matt loved to be outside on his four-wheeler or snowmobile, loved to drive his car and to hunt. A member of the National Honor Society, he dreamed of becoming a mechanic someday. No matter how he was feeling, Matt always told the nurses and doctor that he was "good." Survived by parents; brother, Michael; sister, Michelle; grandmother, Eileen "Nonnie" Doig; grandfather, Walter "Grampa" Wittwer; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; dog, Spade; and special friends, Jeremy and Carrie Klinefelter. Predeceased by grandfather, Malcolm "Bompie" Doig; grandmother, Hazel "Grammy" Wittwer; and cousin, Crystal Doig. Special thanks to Dr. Morgan, Jackie, Jenn and Children's Memorial Hospital staff; Dr. Tom Michaelsen's office; home health nurse, Joanna; OSF Ambulatory Care; Ogle County Hospice; and Dr. Kalweit. Memorial service at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 21, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1045 Belvidere Road, with visitation from 2 to 5 p.m.; the Rev. Alan Buss will officiate. Burial at 1 p.m. Friday in Maple Cemetery, Kirkland. Everyone is invited to the committal service. At the family's request, please do not send flowers but rather send memorial gifts to Bear Necessities, Cal's Angels, CureSearch, Hunt of a Lifetime or Make a Wish Foundation.
