Miriam Nyman Obituary

MIRIAM L. NYMAN, 89 ROCKFORD - Miriam L. Nyman, 89, of Rockford, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014, in Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center. Born August 27, 1924, in Rockford, Ill., the daughter of Carl O. and Mildred (Hoge) Nyman. Miriam graduated from Rockford College where she received her B.S. in education and later with an M.A. from Northwestern University. She was employed as a secondary level teacher and was chairman of West High School English Department. Miriam was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, belonged to Kimamoto Church Circle, Trinity Alter Guild, Deaconess Library, Archives Committees, Worship and Music Committee, TWELCA, Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Delta Kappa, Pi Lamda Theta, Rockford Women's Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and P.E.O. International. Miriam is survived by special cousins, Marti (Dave) Borger, Donna (Bob) Aden; many other relatives; and dear friends, Mike and Ginger Rich, and Harriett Dudley. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., with Pastor Jay Quinn officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to10:45 a.m. prior to the service in the chapel. Memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church, 200 N. First St. Rockford, IL 61107. Miriam Nyman was a friend of my mother's (Mary Phillips) for many years.They played bridge together and were in the same church circle at Trinity Lutheran Church.Miriam was a very sweet lady.My condolences go out to her family.

Miss Nyman was my Dept Chair at West High School until I moved to Georgia in 1976. We shared ongoing correspondence and our mutual love of travel until just a few years ago when suddenly I stopped receiving her Christmas card and note. I had even called and spoken to someone in her home. I knew her health was declining and this day would eventually come. She was one of the sweetest and loving women and mentor and will be missed. She taught m4 much with her gentle ways and dedication to teaching.

I had the honor of being in Miss Nyman's class at West High School. She was generous with her knowledge and always unfailingly kind and encouraging. She was a role model as a teacher and as a human being. May she rest in peace.

So sorry for your loss. I was her student teacher in 1975/76 and learned so much from her. She was patient, kind and cared deeply for her students. She made the best apple crisp and I continue to make it in her honor! Rest in peace, Miss Nyman.

I will miss my dear friend and mentor. During our DAR times together Miriam was an outstanding Chapter Regent for four years and elected an Honorary Regent for life.

I took care of Miriam for a short period of time during my clinicals at Fairhaven. She was so sweet! She gave me lots of advice about school and life. I will never forget her. So sorry for your loss.

I worked with Miriam for years at West High School in its English Department. Miriam was always a caring, loving teacher for her students and fellow staff. She will be missed.
