Bobby and I went from 5th grade through high school. I remember that he drew funny cartoons that were fun for all. Naturally we all went separate ways. In 1934 my family moved from Rockford to Ft. Worth. we lived at 1616 Van Wie Ave. I think that is the way it was spelled. I started 1st grade at R. K. Welsh elementary school. When I read about Bob (we called him Bobby), memories came flooding in. What a marvelous person he became. My heart goes out to his family. Peace be with you, Joanne Olmsted Sarsgard

Severson Dells Nature Center mourns the loss of Dr. Hedeen. We shared a mission of connecting people to nature through education and we're grateful to have had such a wonderful ally in Bob. His Rock River Times column kept the awe and wonder of nature in the public's eye. He was a passionate teacher, and preacher, an environmental missionary in a world that views nature as something to conquer, not something to behold, protect and celebrate.

Thanks to the Hedeen family for requesting that memorials be made to Severson Dells Nature Center. Bob's mission of teaching people about nature will be a part of his legacy. His work, and our work, has never been more important on planet where the delicate natural systems that sustain life are rapidly changing and under tremendous pressure. We believe that education is the answer.

As Sengelese Poet Baba Dioum once said: "In the end, we will conserve only what we love; we love only what we understand; we will understand only what we are taught. “

Thanks, Bob, for helping us all understand.

My deepest sympathy to your family. I did not know Mr. Hedeen personally, but as a reader of the Rock River Times I always enjoyed reading his columns. I marveled at the depth of his knowledge, and the love of the natural world he clearly exhibited.
