Shirl Don Reed, 91, of Rockford, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. Born on March 1, 1928, in Racine, Wisconsin, the son of Russell and E. Lucile (Carncross) Reed. Attended Lincoln and East High, graduating in 1945. Attended University of Wisconsin (EE) 1945-48, University of Illinois 1949, but eventually graduated from Rockford College. Employed at Barber-Colman Company 1950-1967 and Warner Electric 1967-retiring 1990. His responsibilities at Warner involved frequent international travel to Europe, Japan, and Southeast Asia, and South America. Shirl married Elaine Siden on February 14, 1954, in Rockford. He enjoyed photography early in his life and was a member of Rockford Stamp Club. Shirl was an active East High School alumni, member of Society of Mayflower Descendants, and active in the Winnebago-Boone Genealogy Society. Survived by his wife, Elaine; children, John (Deborah) Reed, Steven (Cindi) Reed; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew. Predeceased by his brother, Wendell in 2005; and daughter, Sharon Smid in February of 2019.
Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 25, 2020 in Fred C. Olson Chapel; 1001 2nd Ave., Rockford, with Rev. Frank Langholf officiating.
