SHIRLEY A. SCHERER, 75 ROCKFORD - Shirley A. Scherer, 75, of Rockford died at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011, in her home, surrounded by her family. Born Nov. 7, 1935, in Rockford, the daughter of Vincent and Frances (Canova) Cassaro. She was a graduate of Mount St. Claire High School in Clinton, Iowa. She married Jack Scherer on Oct. 1, 1955; he died in 1996. Shirley worked for Winnebago School District in the early 1970s and later for the Rockford Township as a secretary. Shirley also served as Rockford Township road commissioner; she retired in 1997. She volunteered at Rockford Memorial Hospital, NIRIS Radio/Reading to the blind and was featured in "Who's Who" 1996-1997 edition of executives and professionals. Shirley enjoyed crossword puzzles, taking long trips with her daughters, sitting out in the sun, window shopping, eating home-cooked meals and her cat, Max. The most important thing to her was her family. Survived by daughter, Jacki (Pete) Helsinger-Owen and Lisa (Tom) Rhynes, both of Rockford; grandchildren, Jessica and Emily Helsinger, Steven (Jennifer) Lawrence, Ryan (Heather Lawnduski) Lawrence, Brandon, Brandi, Noah and Aaron Owen; great-grandchildren, Landyn Helsinger, Ryan Jr., and Peyton Lawrence; nephew, Don (Susan) Cassaro; and niece, Diane Petrosky. Predeceased also by son, Kevin Scherer; great-grandson, Blake Lawrence; brother, James (Pat) Cassaro; and wonderful friend, Greg Calleia. Special thanks to her special friend, Sharon Rever. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 11, in Olson Funeral & Cremation Services Ltd., North Main Chapel, 2811 N. Main St. Private burial in New Milford Cemetery. Lisa I am so sorry to just now learn of your mother's passing. I guess I haven't been reading the Rockford paper as much as I used to... that is a beautiful photo of your mom when she was a young lady; you look a lot like her! God's blessings to you and your family at this time!

Tears in my heart and soul for my family I love and cherish, Jackie, Petey and kiddos. Shirley is at peace, without pain and watching over us.

Lisa and Tom, It saddens me to see that Shirley has passed. She was quit the lady and enjoyed her every time she came in to see us. My thoughts are with you during this time.

My thoughts go out to all of you, Shirley was a wonderful lady and will be missed by all who new her. She is at peace now and I am sure up in heaven looking down on all and making some funny comments about us! I will miss going into Rockford Memorial Hopital and seeing her there.
