Warren Layng Obituary
Warren Layng, 91, of Rockford, died peacefully February 1, 2016, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 23, 1924, in Rockford to Harry and Edna (Warren) Layng. Warren graduated from Rockford East High School in 1942. Soon after he enlisted in the United States Infantry Army and during World War II Warren served his country in both the European Front and in Japan. On July 2, 1945, he married the love of his life Marcella Wahlquist. They were married 62 years. Upon returning from the war Warren joined his father in selling used cars at Layng's Auto Sales while attending Beloit College. Here he received a Bachelor's Degree and taught math and social studies in the Harlem School District for 25 years. After retiring Warren and Marcee traveled the country in search of antiques and established Layng's Antiques. Together they bought and sold the beautiful furniture they refinished. Warren is survived by his son, Michael Layng; daughters, Jeanne S. (Robert) Nakamaru, Susan Layng (Stephen Walker); grandchildren, Cary Nakamaru (Danielle Peterson), Kyoko Nakamaru (Aaron Amaro), Jessica McCallen (Darrin Mack), Aaron McCallen (Emily Boersma) and Keva Walker; great-grandchildren, Simone Mack and Warren McCallen; and cousins Charles Williams, Mary Sweeney, and Scott Williams. Marcella predeceased him February 9, 2007. We are grateful to the Rockford Memorial Hospital Neurological Surgical Team, and all the wonderful physicians, nurses and CNAs in the Intensive Care, and the Step Down and Cardiac Units. We give our deepest thanks to the angels from Northern Illinois Hospice who eased Warren on his way. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northern Illinois Hospice.
Visitation will be held February 8, 2016, 11 a.m to noon, followed by memorial from noon to 1 p.m., at Emerson House, 420 North Main Street. Burial of cremains will be held in a private ceremony at Scandinavian Cemetery.

Mr. Layng was one of my favorite teachers at Hoffman. He was a very good teacher and a very sweet man. RIP Mr. Layng.

We have many fond memories of Warren from being on the staff of Hamilton Junior High with him in the 1960's. He was a fine teacher with a keen sense of humor. Our condolences to his family. R.I.P. Warren.
